Bollywood movies are all about creativity, imagination, history, message, humour and entertainment. Inspiration runs in Bollywood. You can find variety of movies. Some are based on real life stories and incidents, some are biographies of some famous personalities and some are inspired from Hollywood, Tollywood or any other film cinema.
There’s a twist you can see in this century. Now, the film makers have started making movies out of the novels they read or the books they get inspiration from, whether it’s a drama, a fiction, an autobiography, a love story or anything from A to Z.
Here are mentioned some of the books that have inspired many Bollywood movies so far. Have a glanced look at them.
- SAHEB, BIWI AUR GULAM
Okay, So beginning with the era of 90s. Saheb, Biwi aur Gulam, the 1962 version produced by the talented Guru Dutt is based on Saheb, Bibi Aur Golam written by the Bengali author, Bimal Mitra. It is the book which was liked by huge mass and the movie was a box office block buster at that time. The movie insights a look into the tragic fall of haveli dom that took place in Bengal during the British Raj.
The film has received many awards. It has received President’s Silver Medal for Best feature film in hindi and has been awarded with the filmfare award for the best movie too.

You can love him, you can hate him but you can’t ignore him.
Chetan Bhagat’s grey cells have given us not one, not two, not three, but four Bollywood movies: Hello, 3 Idiots, Kai Po Che and 2 States, two of these being mega-blockbusters.
Coming to the teenage and what not to do at IIT, Five Point someone is a novel written by Chetan Bhagat whose story revolves around the three youngsters and their lives whose happiness, joy and elation of being selected in one of the best engineering colleges in India is being deflated by the monotonous academic work load and zero practical knowledge in College.
3 Idiots produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Rajkumar Hirani with Aamir Khan as a lead role revolves around the same plot. It is a must watch movie which has won 52 Indian film awards including 6 filmfare awards. You can by the book from any of the online website. - DEVDAS
The three overtly dramatic, 70mm film stories of the heavy-drinker Devdas are actually based on the book by same name, written by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Along with it, he left Bollywood another ‘to-be-movied’ book in the form of his 1914 novel, Parineeta.
These are some of the mega blockbusters of that time and are still remembered by many.
- OTHELLO BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Omkara movie is based on the play Othello by William Shakespeare. It is one of the tragedy written by Shakespeare in 1603. Omkara is a 2006 Indian crime drama film adapted from it, co-written and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.
The story of the play revolves around its two central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army and his unfaithful ensign, Iago. Given its varied and enduring themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike, and has been the source for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations.
Omkara is one of the favourite movies of those times. People watched it again and again and it broke all the initial records. The mmovie received so many national film festival awards including seven filmfare awards.
- EMMA BY JANE AUSTEN
Sonam Kapoor starrer, Aisha, a story of a bubbly girl, was based and lifted from one of the Jane Austen’s novel Emma.
It is a book based on youthful hubris and the perils of misconstrued romance. The story takes place in the fictional village of Highbury and the surrounding estates of Hartfield, Randalls, and Donwell Abbey and involves the relationships among individuals in those locations consisting of “3 or 4 families in a country village”.
The protagonist of the story creates a lively comedy of manners among her characters and depicts issues of marriage, gender, age, and social status.
Aisha is set in the upper class society of Delhi, India with the same tone as the 1995 cult Hollywood film Clueless which is also an adaptation of Austen’s novel. The music by Amit Trivedi crated a magical effect, indeed.
Aisha received positive reaction with a mix of little criticism.
- HAMLET BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Haider, starring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor is also an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet.
Hamlet is Shakespeare’s longest play, and is considered among the most powerful and influential works of world literature, with a story capable of “seemingly endless retelling and adaptation by others”.[1] It was one of Shakespeare’s most popular works during his lifetime,[2]and still ranks among his most performed. The movie, haider, is all set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. Haider, a young student and a poet, returns to Kashmir at the peak of the conflict to seek answers about his father’s disappearance and ends up being tugged into the politics of the state.
The movie didn’t hit the Bollywood but es, audience was impressed by the work done by the actors and made it into the list of top movies.
- The Last Leaf – Lootera
Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera, starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha was partly based on O. Henry’s short story, The Last Leaf. While Pakhi Roy Chaudhary was a character developed on the lines of the story itself, Motwane along with scriptwriter Bhavani Iyer created the character of the conman, Nandu.
